quote:
Moeneeb Josephs is fast becoming one of the most exciting players to watch in South African football.
Josephs was in fantastic form in goals for Ajax this past season. He won nine Premier Soccer League (PSL) Man-of-the-Match awards and two Flexy Save awards in the Absa Cup. His outstanding performances also saw him win the Player of the Year award and Player's Player of the Year at Ajax. He was also voted the PSL Player's Player of the Year, completing a great year in his fledgling career.
"After winning the PSL Player's Player of the Year award I felt honoured. I was over the moon," says the Ajax goalkeeper. "I couldn't believe it when I was called up to the stage to collect my cheque and trophy. Being chosen by players as the best for this award was something great for me."
The 2002/2003 season was Josephs' first professional season playing in the Ajax first team on a regular basis.
Josephs' courage and understanding of the game allows him to read a match well and pull off the spectacular saves that he is quickly becoming renowned for. He also possesses one of the rare qualities that few goalkeepers in the world have - the ability to come out of his goal and produce match-winning saves. When it comes to penalty shootouts, he's rated as being amongst the best stoppers in the country.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper has earned call-ups to the senior national team for the matches against Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, England and Cote d'Ivoire. However, it will take Josephs quite some time to claim the No 1 jersey in the Bafana Bafana team. Kaizer Chiefs skipper, Brian Baloyi, and former Santos and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Andre Arendse, are the two players that stand between Josephs and the national jersey.
"I've matured now and I'm used to waiting for a long time before I get a chance to play," says Josephs. "The more I wait the hungrier I get. And one thing's for sure ... when I get my chance I will make a success of it."
Baloyi and Arendse should be careful because Josephs is not a pushover, especially when it comes to competition. He deputised for Wayne Roberts during his first season of topflight football with the now disbanded Cape Town Spurs. In 1999 he joined Ajax Cape Town where he came up against tough competition in Calvin Marlin.
But it was during the beginning of the 2002/2003 season that Josephs got his chance and held on to it with both hands - leaving Marlin with no chance of regaining the Ajax No 1 jersey. Since then, the youngster has established himself as the best goalkeeper at Ajax and in the PSL.
Josephs admits that, although he has had a wonderful season this year, he still has a lot to learn. And judging from the vast international experience that both Brian Baloyi and Andre Arendse possess, he will learn a lot from the duo.
Age is on Joseph's side, with Baloyi in his late twenties and Arendse nearing retirement. In the coming years Josephs would like to see himself playing regularly for his country and also playing for one of the big European teams.
"My dream is to play for one of the top teams in Europe. From an early age I've dreamed of playing either for Real Madrid or Manchester United. I like Real Madrid's goalkeeper, Iker Casillas. He's brilliant and quite a remarkable player to watch. He's young and is definitely the kind of player one can look up to," says Josephs.
Josephs started playing football at the age of nine at Westdale Football Club. Later he moved to Westridge. "I think I was lucky enough to be born into a football playing family," says Josephs. "My late grandfather was one of the best goalkeepers during his day and my father also played as a goalkeeper. Unfortunately none of them ever made it to professional football."
It was in a tournament that Louis Faria, a talent scout for Cape Town Spurs, noticed Josephs' talent and took him to the club.
"My performance in the 1996 tournament was just good enough to convince Faria and I ended up joining the Spurs under-19 team," remembers Josephs.
Even then Josephs had not decided to make football a career. However, his inclusion in the first team, after a few months with the Under-19's, soon changed his attitude towards the game. He started training harder and started to give football more attention.
The 1999 merger between Spurs and Seven Stars saw Josephs joining Ajax Cape Town, a team made up of top players from both teams. Here he was a third-choice goalkeeper, with Calvin Marlin and John Goodwin competing for the No 1 jersey.
"For me, deputising both Goodwin and Marlin wasn't a problem at all. This was because I knew they were on top because they deserved to be there," says Josephs. "And what also kept me going was that I was gaining experience and being on the bench watching them play was just good enough for me."
Josephs' break came when Marlin failed to impress after recovering from an injury. Ajax coaching staff decided to give the youngster a chance and since then Josephs has held on to the No 1 jersey.
Today Josephs is the first choice goalkeeper at Ajax and Innocent Mayoyo, one of the most experienced and well-traveled goalkeepers in the country, is his deputy.
